Mr. Robert John was born in Trinidad where he started learning martial arts at the early age of 7. In 1976, his family immigrated to the United States. He was then exposed to the Chinese Martial Arts in Brooklyn, NY. He studied under Master Jason Lau, who taught the Wing Chun Kung Fu style. After joining the United States Marines and traveling to the Far East, he lived in Okinawa, Japan for 2 years where he learned the National Art of Okinawa Karate. Once moving back to the States, he continued his pursuit of martial arts studies.
In 1993 under Master Tony Chuy, he began studying the Praying Mantis Kung Fu system and is still a student and a disciple of Master Chuy. Aside from his thorough knowledge of the Praying Mantis System, he is a certified instructor and has studied various northern and southern Chinese weaponry and Yang Style Tai Chi. Mr. John has been a personal trainer and self-defense instructor for the past 20 years.
